Pickets per 100 feet by picket width & gap
Typical industry planning values — NOT a structural/geotechnical design. Frost depth, soil, wind load and local code set the real post depth and footing; check your local building department and call 811 to locate utilities before you dig. A licensed engineer sizes load-bearing or high-wind fence posts.
Pickets are counted by their coverage: pickets = ceil(line × 12 ÷ (width + gap)). The table below shows pickets per 100 ft for the common 3.5" and 5.5" widths across a range of gaps — labeled typicals; measure your product. Use it with the picket / board count calculator and the board-on-board picket count.
| Picket width | Gap | Pickets per 100 ft |
|---|---|---|
| 3.50" | 0.00" | 343 pickets |
| 3.50" | 1.75" | 229 pickets |
| 3.50" | 2.50" | 200 pickets |
| 5.50" | 0.00" | 219 pickets |
| 5.50" | 1.75" | 166 pickets |
| 5.50" | 2.50" | 150 pickets |
Labeled conventions: pickets = ceil(line × 12 ÷ (width + gap)). Widths 3.5"/5.5" and gaps 0–2.5" are typical — measure your product, and order ~10% extra for waste and corners.
